The little fourth grader was up and ready to begin her day at elementary school.
Her backpack was on her door ready to be filled with yummy snacks for school.
Her feet touch her bedroom ground and she realizes she's no longer in
elementary school.
She looks forward to her first day of 8th grade, the last year before high school.
School was getting harder for her now but that wouldn't stop her from having fun
with her friends.
She steps out the door and now high school is upon her.
The whole world feels as though it will crumble from the stress and weight of
the world.
She has an assignment due today that she has not done, and her friends are growing
more distant by the day.
School has turned from an escape to a chore.
Next year she will be a senior choosing what she wants to do for the next four years.
SLOW DOWN SLOW DOWN SLOW DOWN she repeats as she leaves the house.
Her mind races with worry, am I good enough to get into the college I want? Do I
perform well enough in my sport? Do the people I surround myself with like me?
It feels like just minutes ago I was in elementary school.
She hops into her car starting the engine, now driving to move into her college dorm.
Bags packed in the back, her parents holding back tears as she leaves her driveway.
She feels relaxed and excited like she was meant to do this.
Now her seconds move slowly, from one minute to the next because she realized that
aging is not about how many years have passed, but how much life you’ve embraced.
